My grandma used to say, on the fourteenth day of July, as per the Chinese Calendar, the hungry ghosts from the depths of hell would roam the streets. It was an occasion we reverently referred to as the ghost festival.
Some say the ghost festival finds its origins in the Avalambana Festival of Chinese Buddhism. This annual observance offers people an opportunity to reflect upon their ancestors, whilst also imparting the importance of living in the present moment and cultivating a mindful consciousness.
People often say cinema is a collection of memories. But what if a twin boy walks into a haunted cinema in the 80s during the ghost festival?
